Strategy is critical to business success but it need not be complicated or mysterious. At its base, a good strategy is a plan to achieve visionary goals which is tirelessly communicated and ruthlessly measured.
My approach involves evaluating or developing the mission and vision of the future. Then I work with all levels of management to understand and mitigate potential barriers to success. I help create short-term and long-term objectives to identify milestones and then work with clients to identify and report strategic metrics to monitor progress.
While these things are important, I find that great strategic plans are often victims of poor execution. The best Strategic deployment methods address all three enabling systems: standardized execution processes aligned with the strategy, governance or supporting processes with critical measures of performance and communications systems to enforce culture change throughout the organization.
Strategies are cascaded from the top down and support plans from the bottom up to convert strategic plans to executable projects that lead to success.
A failed plan is better than failing to plan. Strategies are a part of every day life from the mundane to the mission-critical.
My best work is overcoming the fear of crafting a perfect plan. The 80% strategy that is vigorously executed will beat the perfect strategy that is never enacted. I emphasize better alignment and better planning.
